Atop Lookout Mountain in the village of Mentone, the Wildflower Cafe occupies an 1800s log cabin and serves fresh New American dishes with a hippie-chic vibe. One of northeast Alabama's most-reviewed mountain restaurants.

The café sits right on AL-117 at the top of Lookout Mountain in the small village of Mentone, making it a natural pull-off after running the Little River Canyon corridor or the DeSoto stretch. The building is an 1800s log cabin, and the place reads that way inside — intimate, layered with art and handmade goods, broken into smaller dining rooms that keep the feel personal rather than crowded.

The kitchen works from scratch and leans toward locally sourced, hormone-free ingredients where it can get them, with the menu ranging across quiche, chicken salad, fresh-ground burgers, and sandwiches at lunch, and filet mignon, wild-caught salmon, and smothered chicken at dinner on weekends. Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options run through both menus. The tomato pie — Roma tomatoes marinated in balsamic, topped with cheddar and mozzarella, then baked — is the dish regulars point to first. On weekend evenings, local musicians play in the dining room. The café also carries a country store stocked with pottery, local art, jewelry, and clothing, so there's something to browse while the table turns over.

Lunch is walk-in only, which suits riders who don't know exactly when they'll roll in. Dinner on Fridays and Saturdays takes reservations by phone, and the café suggests calling ahead — kitchens this size in mountain villages fill up. Hours are seasonal and can shift, so checking the website before a long detour is worth the thirty seconds.

A popular end-of-canyon-road lunch stop right on AL-117 after riding Little River Canyon or the DeSoto corridor; outdoor seating with mountain-top air.
