Hannagan Meadow Lodge

Hannagan Meadow Lodge sits about 22 miles south of Alpine on US-191 — the Coronado Trail — near mile marker 232, deep inside the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The lodge has operated under a US Forest Service permit since 1926, when the highway was first dedicated, making it one of the longest continuously running stops on the route. That history matters to riders: there is simply nothing else out here. As Arizona Highways noted, the lodge "stands alone in the middle of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, a place generally off-limits to commercial development."

On the property you'll find a general store, a service station, lodge rooms, and eight log cabins — each with a fireplace or wood-burning stove and a full kitchen. The dining room has been serving meals since the 1930s and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. Dinners from the dining room's large windows regularly include views of elk or deer moving through the meadow. Worth knowing: if the lodge is lightly occupied, the dining room may run reduced hours, so calling ahead before you ride up just to eat is a smart move. The 70-mile stretch between the town of Morenci to the south and Hannagan Meadow involves more than 500 sharp curves and steep drop-offs, and the road closes entirely when snow is unplowed, so check conditions before committing to that approach in shoulder seasons.
