Mt. Lemmon Cookie Cabin

The Cookie Cabin sits in Summerhaven, the small village near the summit of Mount Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Getting there means riding the Catalina Highway — a 25-mile climb out of the Sonoran Desert into a forested sky island where the vegetation shifts from saguaro to ponderosa pine as you gain altitude. It's a genuine change of world, and the cabin is where you land at the top.

The place is family-owned and has been since 1990. The original structure was destroyed in the 2003 Aspen Fire, and the family rebuilt and reopened by 2004 with a larger kitchen and an expanded menu. What came back was a two-story log cabin selling the same handcrafted cookies — made from scratch using homemade recipes — alongside New York-style pizza and gourmet chili. The cookies are the draw: oversized, baked fresh, and available in varieties like chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, and a house original called The Rachel. You order at the counter and can watch the food being prepared. Seating is available both inside, where there's a fireplace, and outside on a patio among the pines.

Weather shapes the experience here as much as the food. The mountain gets snow, and the cabin stays open through it; call ahead or check current conditions if you're riding in winter or after a storm, since hours can shift with the weather. The Catalina Highway itself warrants attention — it's a demanding road with no alternate route down, and conditions at the summit can differ sharply from what you left in Tucson.
