Oak Creek Vista Overlook
Oak Creek Vista is a USFS-managed scenic overlook at the top of the SR-89A switchbacks, approximately 14 miles south of Flagstaff. Perched at the canyon rim, it delivers a sweeping view down the full length of Oak Creek Canyon — layers of red, orange, and cream sandstone falling away to the creek below. Native American artisans often set up craft booths in the parking area on weekends. Vault toilets and drinking water are available seasonally. This is the transition point between the high Coconino Plateau and the canyon descent toward Sedona — a natural pause before or after one of Arizona's most photogenic motorcycle roads.
Oak Creek Vista sits at the canyon rim where SR-89A crests the Coconino Plateau before dropping into Oak Creek Canyon — a USFS-managed pull-off about 14 miles south of Flagstaff. From here the overlook gives what the Forest Service describes as "a view from the top of the Canyon, where the eastern drop is easily seen" — layers of colorful rock falling away to the creek far below. The SR-89A corridor it overlooks carries a National Scenic Byway designation, and the canyon itself is a gorge carved along the Oak Creek Fault into the edge of the Mogollon Rim of the Colorado Plateau.
The parking area doubles as an outdoor Native American arts and crafts market. The vista and marketplace are open year-round (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas), and a seasonal information booth operated jointly by the Coconino National Forest and the Arizona Natural History Association is generally staffed from early April through November, weather permitting. Vault toilets are on-site. SR-89A through the canyon is entirely paved but the switchbacks demand full attention — traffic can be heavy on weekends, and the road is subject to closure during winter storms and icy conditions.
