Salt River Canyon Overlook
The Salt River Canyon Rest Area sits at the bottom of a dramatic 2,000-foot canyon on US-60 between Globe and Show Low, right on the banks of the Salt River. A pair of bridges — the current 1996 vehicle span and the historic 1934 pedestrian bridge — offer a perfect mid-canyon pause. Riders descend hairpin switchbacks through layers of ancient rock before reaching the river level, then climb equally spectacular curves on the far side. Vault toilets and picnic tables are on-site; this is the only developed stop in the canyon itself.
Sitting at the canyon floor on US-60 between Globe and Show Low, this rest area is the one developed stop in a canyon that drops roughly 2,000 feet from conifer-covered mesas to river-level desert. The road down is a sustained series of hairpin switchbacks through exposed layers of ancient rock — the turns demand real attention, and brakes need time to recover. Two bridges mark the bottom: the 1934 span, now open only to pedestrians, and the 1996 vehicle bridge that carries traffic across the Salt River and onto White Mountain Apache land. The rest area sits on the boundary between San Carlos Apache and White Mountain Apache territory, right on the river bank.
From the pedestrian bridge and a staircase leading toward the water, you get a direct look at the river running beneath both structures — not a distant panorama, but close-up canyon geometry. Restrooms are composting toilets, which have been upgraded as part of a renovation completed by the Arizona Department of Transportation; picnic tables are on site. There is no fee to stop. The climb out mirrors the descent — steep grades, sweeping curves, the rock walls shifting color as elevation rises. Plan time here; it is a longer stop than it first looks.
The only pull-off inside the canyon — the twisty descent and climb on US-60 are reason enough, but the dual bridges and river views make it a mandatory stop.
