Rainbow Curve Overlook

Rainbow Curve sits at exactly the point where the sub-alpine forest surrenders to open tundra — a hard, visible boundary that makes this pullout different from every other overlook on US-34. The low stone wall enclosing the outer edge of the switchback is what frames the ride: you park, walk ten steps, and the whole eastern slope of Rocky Mountain National Park opens below you. Horseshoe Park, the Alluvial Fan, Deer Mountain, the Beaver Ponds, and the full sweep of the Mummy Range are all in the same field of view.

The name comes from what happens after summer afternoon storms roll through — and they do roll through, almost on schedule during the warmer months. Lightning is a real hazard at this elevation, so watch the sky and get back to your bike if cells are building. Once a storm clears, the light hitting the valley below regularly produces the rainbows that gave this place its name. Accessible vault restrooms are on-site, which matters after a long push up the road from the Beaver Meadows Entrance.

Trail Ridge Road closes seasonally when snow makes it impassable, so this stop is a warm-season-only destination. Check road status before heading up — conditions can shut the road on short notice even in summer.
