Open since 1977, The Pantry has operated at 5 Titus Road in Washington Depot village through multiple owners without losing its footing as a neighborhood constant. The current owners took over in the spring of 2021 after more than a decade working alongside the founders, which kept the kitchen culture intact. The menu updates daily and leans on housemade bread, baked goods, soups, and sandwiches — the kind of food that's ready when you walk in and doesn't require a long sit-down.

Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., which means weekday and Saturday morning or midday rides line up well with what's on offer. Washington Depot is otherwise a small village with limited services, so The Pantry fills a genuine gap on the Routes 47, 109, and 202 corridor through the Litchfield Hills — not just a nice extra but often the only real option for a sit-down meal in the immediate area.

Bull's Bridge

Built in 1842, Bull's Bridge is one of only two remaining covered bridges in Connecticut open to vehicular traffic. The single-lane 109-foot lattice-truss span carries Bull's Bridge Road over the Housatonic River near the New York border, flanked by whitewater rapids and a small gorge. A riverside parking area at the southeast end provides access to falls, pools, and a stretch of the Appalachian Trail.

A 28-mile route running roughly parallel to the western bank of the Connecticut River from Old Saybrook north through Essex, Deep River, Chester, and Haddam to Higganum. The 9-mile Haddam section carries a state scenic road designation for its river-view corridor along the Middlesex Turnpike, a toll road since 1802. The southern stretch passes through the historic villages of Essex and Chester — both well-preserved small towns with independent restaurants — before opening onto river panoramas near the Haddam Swing Bridge and Gillette Castle environs. Works well paired with CT-148 and the Chester-Hadlyme ferry (seasonal) for a full valley loop.
