Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area

Sitting on a barrier island where A1A runs between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway, this state recreation area is one of the few spots on Florida's east coast where a rider can pull off the highway and look straight out at an open sea horizon with no development interrupting the view. The park preserves what the Florida State Parks system describes as "a slice of rare undeveloped barrier island" — the coquina sand is a deep orange-brown, the dune crossovers give you a clean sight line north, and the stretch of coast backing up from here stays that way because the land is protected.

The park carries a name worth knowing before you arrive. In October 1991, folk singer Gamble Rogers was camping here with his wife when a young girl approached him for help — her father was caught in rough surf. Rogers grabbed an air mattress and entered the water despite suffering from spinal arthritis since childhood. A park ranger joined the attempt, but a large wave tore the mattress away and Rogers drowned. In 1992 the Florida Legislature renamed the park in his honor. That story sits quietly behind every visit.

For a riding break, the practical case is straightforward: the park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sundown, restrooms are on-site, and there is no lifeguard on duty at the beach. The beachside day-use parking lot and campground were undergoing an improvement project as of mid-2026, so check current conditions with the park before making a dedicated stop.
