Woody Gap Recreation Area

Woody Gap sits where the Appalachian Trail crosses GA-60 between Suches and Dahlonega, a National Forest pull-off that costs nothing to use. On one side of the road the land opens into views down into the Yahoola Valley; picnic tables flank both sides, and a vault toilet is on-site — enough to make a genuine rest stop out of a fuel or stretch break. The gap is part of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest's Blue Ridge District, and the Forest Service lists it as a trailhead with restrooms and multiple picnic areas.

For riders working the Six-Gap loop, Woody Gap registers as one of the named mountain passes on that route and sits roughly halfway along the GA-60 run north toward Suches. It draws a different crowd than the more trafficked Neel Gap to the south — fewer cars, quieter tables, and the same ridge-top air. If the A.T. crossing catches your attention, a short out-and-back on the trail offers views of the North Georgia Mountains without committing to a long hike. Gear toward layers in cooler months; a mountain gap is exposed, and temperatures drop noticeably from the valley floor.
