It runs roughly 15 miles between Galena and Savanna through Jo Daviess County's Driftless terrain — hills and ridges that were never glaciated, leaving the county with the steep, carved landscape that's rare anywhere in the flat Midwest. The road has turns and elevation changes throughout, with occasional Mississippi River views, and riders note that wildlife crossings — deer in particular — are common, so watch your sight lines on the blind sections. Galena works well as the base: park on or near Main Street, walk the core, eat, then head out on Blackjack before or after.

Fall tends to bring heavier traffic given the foliage in the surrounding river valleys, so expect more cars on rural roads during peak autumn weekends.
