Illinois Route 2 follows the Rock River for 39 miles between Rockford and Dixon through northwestern Illinois, passing Castle Rock State Park's limestone bluffs, the historic village of Grand Detour (where IL-2 crosses the river), and the town of Oregon near Ogle County's bluff-top park. The road is wooded, largely flat to gently rolling, and hugs the riverbank closely enough that the water is visible through the tree line for much of the route. Castle Rock State Park's bluff views — about 3 miles south of Oregon — are the scenic high point. Light traffic on weekdays makes it a smooth cruiser-pace road.
