Brown County State Park encompasses 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges, and ravines in south-central Indiana — the largest state park in Indiana. The North Gate entrance at 1801 State Road 46 E gives access to nearly 20 miles of tree-lined park roads with multiple scenic vistas overlooking miles of uninterrupted forestland. The park is a natural extension of the SR-46 motorcycle corridor from Bloomington, and the forest roads inside provide additional low-speed winding miles beyond the main byway.
The North Gate on State Road 46 puts you directly into Indiana's largest state park, and for a rider already running the SR-46 corridor west from Columbus or east from Bloomington, the turn-in adds almost nothing to the approach. What it adds inside is real: the park's road network threads through narrow ridges, steep slopes, and deep ravines shaped by glacial meltwaters — terrain that gives south-central Indiana more elevation change and more canopy-covered curves than most riders expect from the state.
One practical note before you roll in: the North Gate entrance passes through a historic covered bridge with a 9-foot height clearance and a 3-ton weight limit. Solo motorcycles clear it without a thought, but keep it in mind if you're traveling with a group that includes a chase vehicle or trailer. The posted park speed limit is 30 mph, and the DNR notes that some hills and curves will require going slower — the roads reward attention, not pace. Fall color season draws the heaviest crowds; weekday visits earlier or later in the season give you the roads largely to yourself.
