Loess Hills Scenic Overlook
A wheelchair-accessible wooden observation platform in the Loess Hills State Forest on Oak Ave, Moorhead, IA 51558, in Monona County. The drive-up overlook is reached via a gravel parking lot (10+ vehicles) and a short ramped path. Views sweep west over the Missouri River bottomlands and across the Nebraska plains, with prairie ridges and forested ravines in the foreground. Interpretive panels explain how wind-deposited loess soils — among the deepest in the world outside China — formed these distinctive hills. Open 24 hours. Closest named overlook to Preparation Canyon State Park.
The anchor viewpoint on the 220-mile Loess Hills National Scenic Byway — Iowa's only National Scenic Byway. The bluff roads along this corridor (Hwy 183, County K45) are the best curves in western Iowa. The overlook is drive-up with a gravel lot; no hike required.
