Loess Hills Scenic Overlook

The wooden observation platform here sits within Loess Hills State Forest and looks west over the Missouri River bottomlands and across the Nebraska plains, with prairie ridges and forested ravines filling the foreground. Interpretive panels on the platform explain the geology at your feet: the loess that built these hills is wind-deposited silt, laid down as glaciers melted and the Missouri Valley carried enormous volumes of water. Iowa DNR notes that the resulting landform is unlike almost anything else on the continent — a geological ridge in Harrison and Monona counties that draws comparison only to similarly deep loess deposits in China.

The overlook is drive-up, reached by a gravel lot off Oak Ave, and the platform is ramped and accessible — no scramble required before you get the view. Preparation Canyon State Park is the closest named landmark. The byway this overlook anchors — 220 miles of paved road with additional optional loops — is Iowa's only federally designated National Scenic Byway, and the bluff roads of this corridor, including Hwy 183 and County K45, carry the best curves in western Iowa. A heads-up for riders: some side roads branching off the byway are unpaved and can be muddy or rough, so stick to the marked route if you're on a street bike.
