Screw Auger Falls — Grafton Notch

A 23-foot waterfall along the Bear River tucked inside Grafton Notch State Park, accessed directly from a signed pull-off on ME-26 — no trail involved beyond a 100-yard walk along a fenced gorge. The falls cut through a rugged pothole gorge in granite, and the setting is dense boreal forest with surrounding peaks. The park charges a day-use fee (cash/check only). Open May 15 through October 15. The park address is 1941 Bear River Road, Newry.

ME-26 through Grafton Notch is a state-designated scenic byway rated among Maine's best motorcycle roads — narrow, curvey, and flanked by mountains. Screw Auger Falls is a zero-effort roadside stop that justifies pulling over; the gorge walls alone are worth the five-minute detour.
