Thunder Hole — Acadia
A narrow sea-inlet carved into the granite coastline along Acadia's Park Loop Road, about two miles south of Bar Harbor. When waves enter the slot at mid-tide, compressed air explodes upward with a thunderous boom audible from the parking area. The Park Loop Road — a 27-mile one-way scenic drive — is one of the finest motorcycle roads in the Northeast, and Thunder Hole is its most dramatic single stop. A paved parking area and walkway are accessible directly from the road. Park entry fee applies.
The inlet itself is a narrow slot carved into the pink granite of Mount Desert Island's eastern shoreline. When a wave rushes in at the right moment, it traps air inside a small cavern at the far end of the channel and forces it out under pressure — the result is a concussive boom that riders in the parking area can hear plainly. Wave spray from a good hit can reach over 40 feet, though that kind of show depends entirely on conditions: wave action, tide level, and swell direction all have to align. The NPS recommends arriving one to two hours before high tide for the best chance; on a flat-calm day the slot just sits there and you wonder what the fuss was about.
The pull-out is right on Park Loop Road, with a paved lot, restrooms, and a gift shop — the latter housed in what was originally the park's first ranger station, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its rustic NPS design. Stairs and an accessible ramp lead down to an observation deck with railings above the inlet. Stay on the walkway: the granite ledges beyond it are wet, uneven, and unforgiving, and rogue waves have caught visitors off guard even in calm weather. During storms, sections of the walkway close entirely.
Even if the tide doesn't cooperate, the stop earns its place on the loop. From the viewing area the coastline opens up to Sand Beach to the north and Otter Cliff to the south, and the pink granite takes on a warm cast when the eastern sun hits it at low angles. It's a natural pull-out point mid-loop, and most riders find it worth the few minutes off the bike regardless of the noise.
The Park Loop Road is a motorcycle classic — sweeping ocean-cliff curves, carriage roads, and summit access all on one continuous loop. Thunder Hole is the most photogenic stop on the route and has its own parking pull-out; the timing of the boom is best around mid-tide on incoming swells.
