High Rock Overlook

Pen Mar High Rock Road dead-ends at a parking lot on South Mountain, putting riders within a short walk of an open rock ledge where the Appalachian Trail crosses the summit. No trailhead, no fee, no ranger station — just a paved road off MD-491 that goes all the way to the top. The access road is gated from dusk to 9 AM, so plan your stop for mid-morning or afternoon.

The ledge itself is the talking point. Decades of visitors have spray-painted every surface — the rocks, the old hang-glider launch platform, the stairs — into a dense, chaotic canvas that divides opinion but makes for genuinely interesting photos. The hang-gliding launch here is no longer open for routine use; a permit is required for organized events. What draws riders now is the view north into Pennsylvania and the sheer weirdness of the place. The painted rocks are slippery underfoot, so watch your step if you scramble toward the edge — a fence has been added in recent years after incidents. No restrooms on site.
