Quabbin Highlands (MA-122)
A 40-mile route on MA-122 from Worcester north through Paxton, Rutland, Oakham, Barre, Petersham, New Salem, and Orange, forming the eastern leg of the classic Quabbin Reservoir loop ride. The road passes through forests and farmland flanking the former Swift River Valley — the drowned townships inundated in the 1930s to create Quabbin Reservoir — with tree-lined stretches, creeks, and lake views. Exceptionally well-maintained pavement. Western Massachusetts Scenic Byways designates it as a named byway. Watch for morning fog in low-lying stretches near the Swift River.
