Hancock Overlook — Kancamagus Highway

Hancock Overlook sits just east of the Kancamagus Highway's hairpin turn — the sharpest U-bend on the Lincoln side of the road — so riders coming out of that corner arrive at the pull-off already at low speed, with a clear reason to stop. The view opens westward across the Osceola Range and into the Pemigewasset Wilderness, a wide southwesterly panorama that faces into the afternoon and evening light. A covered gazebo with benches and interpretive displays about the local landscape sits at the edge of the paved lot, and the Hancock Notch Trail departs from the same parking area for those who want to stretch their legs beyond the overlook.

A White Mountain National Forest day-use fee is required to park here — pay at the self-service kiosk or display a forest annual pass. The lot fills fast during fall foliage weekends, often by mid-morning; weekdays and early starts give you a better shot at a space. Vehicles towing trailers are advised against entering, given the tight approach off the hairpin. The pull-off also draws a lot of foot traffic crossing the road between the parking area and the trailhead, so watch for pedestrians moving through the same corner that makes this stop worth pulling into.
