Jemez Mountain Trail (NM-4)

NM-4 is the primary highway of the Jemez Mountain Trail National Scenic Byway, running 68 miles from San Ysidro (at US-550) northeast to White Rock (at NM-502). The route enters dramatic red-walled Jemez Canyon near Jemez Pueblo, passes through the hot springs village of Jemez Springs, climbs through Carson National Forest to the rim of Valles Caldera — a 13-mile-wide volcanic caldera at 8,900 feet filled with grazing elk — then descends through the ponderosa plateaus above Los Alamos. The road through the caldera section offers sweeping open views with minimal traffic and high-quality pavement.
