Sacramento Mountains — Cloudcroft (US-82)
US-82 climbs from the Chihuahuan Desert floor at Alamogordo (4,350 feet) to the summit village of Cloudcroft (8,650 feet) in 16 miles — a 4,300-foot elevation gain through tight switchbacks in the Sacramento Mountains of Lincoln National Forest. The ascent passes through the Mexican Canyon, where the 1899 Mexican Canyon Trestle (a 97-foot curved railroad bridge on the National Register of Historic Places) is visible from a USFS overlook. At the summit, Cloudcroft is a Victorian-era resort village with pine-shaded streets and clear views west across the White Sands basin. The full corridor from Artesia to Alamogordo covers 109 miles of varied terrain.
