Sunspot Solar Observatory
The Sunspot Solar Observatory sits at 9,200 feet at the end of NM-6563 (the Sunspot Scenic Byway), 18 miles south of Cloudcroft in the Sacramento Mountains. The 15-mile byway zigzags along the front rim of the Sacramento escarpment with drop-offs revealing White Sands National Park some 5,000 feet below. The facility's Astronomy & Visitors Center is open daily 9am–5pm (peak season) and features exhibits, a guided walking tour map, and views of the Richard B. Dunn Solar Telescope — a 136-foot vacuum tower that has operated since 1969. Road signs along NM-6563 are named for planets, precisely spaced at 1:250,000,000 scale. No food service on-site; Cloudcroft is the nearest resupply.
The only road in or out is 15 miles of rim-edge switchbacks with a 5,000-foot canyon visible the whole way — the observatory is a bonus; the byway itself is the destination.
