Valles Caldera National Preserve Overlook

The main gate of Valles Caldera National Preserve at Mile Marker 39.2 on NM-4 opens onto one of the most dramatic roadside views in the Southwest: a 13-mile-wide volcanic caldera floor at 8,900 feet, often dotted with herds of grazing elk. The preserve was formed by a supervolcanic eruption 1.25 million years ago. From the highway, the scale of the open meadow basin against the forested caldera rim is immediately striking. A visitor center with ranger programs and a bookstore sits near the entrance gate. Elk are viewable year-round and the NM-4 corridor through the Jemez Mountains is itself one of New Mexico's premier motorcycle roads.

NM-4 through the Jemez Mountains is premier riding on its own — the caldera pullout adds a genuine geological spectacle and a reliable elk sighting to what's already one of the state's best loops.
