Watkins Glen State Park Gorge Entrance

The gorge at Watkins Glen earns its reputation through sheer geology: Glen Creek drops 400 feet over roughly two miles, cutting through 200-foot walls of layered shale and sandstone to produce 19 waterfalls along a single trail. The path winds over and under those falls — at one point passing directly behind Cavern Cascade, where water has undercut a sandstone ledge by eroding softer shale beneath. Stone staircases, arched bridges, and rock-carved tunnels (including the Spiral Tunnel, hand-cut in 1927) thread the route together, the work largely of a Civilian Conservation Corps crew that rebuilt the trail infrastructure during the 1930s after a flood wiped out earlier structures.

The Gorge Trail is seasonal — the official park trail map notes it is closed from early November through mid-May due to falling rock — so plan accordingly and confirm conditions before heading out. Rim trails above the gorge stay open year-round and give a different perspective looking down into the canyon. Pets are not permitted on the Gorge Trail. Motorcycle parking is available at the main entrance on Franklin Street, which is also where the short walk down to the gorge begins. A park shuttle runs between entrance areas during summer months if you want to walk the gorge one-way rather than retrace your steps.

The park sits at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, which puts the Finger Lakes wine-country back roads within easy reach once you're back in the saddle. The loop on NY-414 and NY-228 around the lake pairs well with the gorge stop and fills out a full day without needing to rush either half.
