Linn Cove Viaduct
The Linn Cove Viaduct is a 1,243-foot S-curved concrete segmental bridge carrying the Blue Ridge Parkway around the south slope of Grandfather Mountain at Milepost 304, in Avery County, NC. Completed in 1987 as the last section of the Parkway to be built, the bridge was the first fully segmental concrete viaduct in North America, constructed piece-by-piece from above using helicopters to avoid disturbing the mountain's fragile ecosystem. A National Park Service visitor center at the south end includes a bridge museum, Tanawha Trail access, and restrooms. Riders can view the viaduct's sweeping S-curve from Rough Ridge Overlook above or from a short walk beneath the bridge itself.
