Hells Canyon Overlook

From the rim at 5,400 feet, the view opens over McGraw Creek and across the canyon to the Seven Devils Mountains rising on the Idaho side of the border. One important thing to know before you pull in: the Snake River itself is not visible from this overlook — the canyon walls and terrain block it — but the scale of what you can see is still considerable. Interpretive signs on site cover the geologic history of the canyon, giving some context to what you're looking at. The site is fully paved, accessible, and has vault toilets and picnic tables. No entry fee is charged.

Getting here from Joseph, you follow the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway (Forest Road 39) roughly 34 miles, then turn onto Forest Road 490 for the final 3 miles to the overlook. A loop road handles parking at the top. Note that potable water is not available on site, so carry what you need. The byway is typically closed by snow from late October through late May or early June, so the window runs roughly from early summer through mid-fall. On the approach and along the byway, wildflowers are a genuine secondary draw — the Forest Service documents significant blooms from late spring through early August, including glacier lilies early in the season followed by penstemons, larkspur, and columbine through summer.
