Baughman Rock Overlook
A dramatic cliff-top overlook inside Ohiopyle State Park in the Laurel Highlands, reached via a 75-yard walk from a large gravel parking area on Sugarloaf Road off Route 381. From the top of Baughman Rock — a massive sandstone outcropping on Laurel Ridge — the view sweeps across the Youghiogheny River Gorge below, one of the finest vistas in southwestern Pennsylvania. Route 381 and the surrounding Laurel Highlands roads offer tight elevation changes and empty two-lane tarmac that rival any riding in the state.
The sandstone outcropping known as Baughman Rock sits high on Laurel Ridge inside Ohiopyle State Park, and the geology does the work for riders: the rock formation has forced a gap in the forest canopy that opens onto a wide sweep of the Youghiogheny River Gorge below. From the parking area off Sugarloaf Road, it's roughly a 75-yard walk up a gravel and stone path to reach the edge — close enough that most riders treat this as a genuine stop rather than a stretch break.
The rock face itself is angled, and sections of the overlook have significant drop-offs with no guardrails, so solid footwear matters and the edge deserves respect. On a clear day the river rounds a visible bend through the gorge; in fall, when the hardwoods turn, the view across the valley is hard to match in this part of the state. Early-morning visits, when valley fog is still burning off, tend to be the quietest — even in summer, the Sugarloaf Road lot draws a fraction of the traffic that gathers at the falls area down in town.
Two miles off Route 381 on a short gravel road (easily passable on any street bike), then a quick walk to a payoff view that's one of the best in the state — zero crowds compared to the Ohiopyle Falls area.
