Calderwood Dam Overlook

The pull-off sits on US-129 at the Tennessee end of the Tail of the Dragon, right where the road opens up after the 318-curve, 11-mile stretch winds north out of the gorge. From the guardrail you look down into the Little Tennessee River canyon at Calderwood Dam — a concrete arch structure completed in 1930 and built by Alcoa to generate hydroelectric power for its aluminum smelting operations in Blount County. The reservoir it created stretches roughly eight miles upstream, with ridgelines of the Great Smoky Mountains rising behind it on the north shore and the Cherokee National Forest bordering the south.

The dam itself sits on a horseshoe bend in the river known as "The Narrows," so the gorge view from the overlook is genuinely deep and enclosed — forested walls dropping straight to still water far below. The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places, and if you look carefully downriver you can still spot old railroad bridge support columns standing in the water, remnants of the rail line that was the only way workers and materials reached the site before a road existed here.

Practically speaking, the pull-off offers ample room to spread out a group of bikes without crowding. It's a natural endpoint on the Tennessee side and just as naturally a turnaround point for riders who want another pass south. There are no services here — no fuel, no food — so treat it as the view stop and debrief spot it is before heading somewhere else to refuel.
