Devil's Backbone Overlook
A signed roadside rest area at approximately 5299 FM 32 in the Comal County hill country, north of Canyon Lake. The overlook sits atop the narrow limestone ridge known as the Devil's Backbone, offering sweeping panoramic views of the Texas Hill Country — rolling oak and juniper-covered valleys extending in every direction. A small paved pullout and picnic tables allow riders to stop safely. FM 32 itself is one of the premier motorcycle roads in the Hill Country, with technical curves, elevation changes, and minimal traffic between Wimberley and Medina.
The overlook sits on the north side of FM 32 at the high point of the limestone ridge, just north of Canyon Lake. From the saddle of the ridge, oak- and juniper-covered valleys roll out in every direction — the same terrain that gave the Backbone its name, a long narrow spine of exposed limestone that erosion has slowly carved from the surrounding Hill Country over millions of years. There is no entry fee and no gate; the pullout is there whenever you are.
The stop itself is a small paved pullout with picnic tables and no restrooms or services. Worth knowing before you pull in: vegetation at the pullout has grown considerably over the years, and some visitors find the views better appreciated from the road itself than from the static overlook position. A roadside memorial fence has also accumulated at the site — crosses and personal items left by locals — so expect a quiet, reflective atmosphere rather than a bare scenic platform. Treat it accordingly.
FM 32 is rideable year-round, though spring and fall bring the most comfortable temperatures and the clearest sight lines across the valleys. At dusk, white-tailed deer cross the road with little warning — a genuine hazard on this stretch — so plan your timing with that in mind. The road runs between Wimberley and Medina with minimal commercial interruption, and the overlook is the one designated stop along the way.
The natural mid-ride photo stop on FM32's Devil's Backbone stretch — the ridgeline narrows to the width of the road in places, giving the sensation of riding a knife-edge with valleys dropping away on both sides. Zero commercial development and clean pavement make it the most scenic Hill Country viewpoint accessible without leaving the saddle.
