Diablo Lake Overlook

The color is the first thing that stops riders mid-thought. The NPS confirms it directly: the turquoise is not a trick of the light but the result of glacial flour — fine rock particles ground off the surrounding mountains by ice — that enters the lake through glacial streams and refracts sunlight once suspended in the water. On a clear summer day the lake sits below the overlook like something poured out of a paint tube, framed by the rugged ridgelines of the North Cascades rising on every side and the historic Diablo Dam visible in the distance.

The pullout itself is well set up for a proper stop. NPS lists auto and RV/bus parking, picnic tables, vault toilets, and trash receptacles — enough infrastructure to eat lunch, walk around, and read the interpretive panels about the lake's geology and the glaciers feeding it, without feeling rushed back to the bike. There is no entry fee for this section of the park.

SR-20 closes seasonally through the high-pass section, so the overlook is most reliably accessible in summer and early fall. The turquoise color peaks during those same months when glacial melt runs highest. Rockslides are a documented hazard along this corridor — WSDOT has conducted emergency slope stabilization work near milepost 131, the overlook's location, as recently as spring 2026 — so checking current road conditions before riding through is worth the few minutes it takes.
