Canyon Rim Visitor Center

The Canyon Rim Visitor Center sits at the edge of the New River Gorge, right at the New River Gorge Bridge, and serves as the park's busiest visitor contact station. Inside, NPS rangers staff an information desk, and the recently renovated facility features updated exhibits covering geology, history, wildlife, and recreation across the park — along with an auditorium, a sales area, and restrooms. There is no admission charge to enter the visitor center or the park itself, and the paved parking area handles large vehicles without difficulty.

The real draw is the two-tier boardwalk outside. A fully accessible ramp reaches the first overlook, where the full span of the New River Gorge Bridge comes into view above the tree line. From there, a stairway descends to a lower platform that puts you roughly at arch level — a perspective that conveys the bridge's true scale in a way that driving across it never does. The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest single-arch steel bridge in the Western Hemisphere, spanning 3,030 feet and rising 876 feet above the river.

If the calendar works out, plan around Bridge Day. Held every third Saturday in October, it draws an estimated 100,000 attendees and is West Virginia's largest single-day festival. On that day the bridge closes to vehicles and opens to pedestrians, BASE jumpers make legal leaps from the span into the gorge below, and rappellers work the catwalk — all visible from the rim. Fall foliage is typically near peak at that point in October, which makes the gorge views from the boardwalk noticeably richer than any other time of year.
