Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor Center

WI-131 through the Kickapoo Valley corridor runs tight against the bluffs for the full length of the reserve, and the road's character is a direct product of the landscape underneath it. The Driftless Area here was never flattened by glaciation, leaving the terrain corrugated with steep-sided valleys and limestone and sandstone outcroppings. The Kickapoo River threads through the whole thing, and the road follows where the valley allows — which means continuous direction changes and little margin on either side. Gravel washed onto the pavement after rain is a real possibility on the lower stretches, and the tight sight lines through the valley walls mean road debris can appear with little warning.

The visitor center, sitting on the west side of WI-131 about 1.5 miles north of La Farge, is a practical first stop rather than a tourist formality. Staff can orient you to conditions in the reserve, hand you trail maps, and fill in the geology that explains why the road rides the way it does. Inside, exhibits cover the reserve's ecology and the history of how the property came to be — co-owned by the State of Wisconsin and held in trust for the Ho-Chunk Nation, managed by the Kickapoo Reserve Management Board. If you're done riding and want to stretch the stop, the center has access to a trail system; note that a permit is required for trail use and can be purchased on-site.
