Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site

The state recreation site sits right at Mile 101 of the Glenn Highway, where the pavement runs closest to the glacier face. From the parking lot alone, the view is substantial — the Matanuska Glacier flows out of the Chugach Mountains, and its terminus stretches roughly four miles wide across the valley floor. The glacier is the largest accessible by car in the United States, and this public site is where you get that view for free.

A short nature trail called the Edge Nature Trail leads from the rest area through a forested stretch to dedicated viewing platforms, a walk the Alaska DNR pegs at about 20 minutes. The platforms have telescope stands, and a half-dozen interpretive signs cover glacial geology along the route. The site also has gravel and paved walkways, some with accessible surfaces, a picnic pavilion, and pit toilets. The site is open through the summer season and closes once winter snow and ice conditions move in.

If the view from the overlook isn't enough, walk-on access to the glacier itself requires crossing onto adjacent private land at Mile 102 — that involves a fee and is managed separately from the state recreation site. The glacier is a dynamic environment with hidden crevasses and no cell service on the ice, so anyone going beyond the overlook trail should use an authorized guided tour with proper gear.
