Leavitt Falls Vista Point
Leavitt Falls Vista Point is a pullout on Highway 108 (Sonora Pass Road) approximately 8.8 miles west of US-395 in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Mono County. A short walk from the turnout delivers views of Leavitt Falls cascading down granite slabs into Leavitt Meadow below, with broad panoramas of the West Walker River valley and the high Sierra above. The viewpoint sits on the eastern descent of Sonora Pass, where the highway opens into sweeping alpine terrain after the tight switchbacks at the summit. Open approximately late May through October depending on snowpack.
A wooden viewing platform sits just steps from the highway pullout, putting the full drop of Leavitt Falls directly in frame — the water spills in multiple tiers down granite slabs into the green expanse of Leavitt Meadow below. From the same spot, the West Walker River valley opens up wide, with the high Sierra rising on the horizon. Picnic tables are on site, making this a reasonable place to cut the engine for fifteen minutes rather than simply rolling past.
The falls run strongest in late spring and early summer when snowmelt is still feeding Leavitt Creek. Later in the season the flow drops considerably, so earlier in the window — roughly late May through October, depending on snowpack — is the better call if the waterfall is the draw. The parking area is small and can fill on summer weekends; arriving early or mid-week keeps it manageable. Highway 108 closes for winter, so the pullout is a warm-season stop only.
This is also a natural place to register the transition in the landscape. Standing at the platform, the lush alpine terrain of the western Sonora Pass descent gives way visibly to the drier, more open country dropping toward US-395 to the east — the pass's split character laid out in a single look.
