Palomar Mountain East Grade (S6)
San Diego County Road S6 (Palomar Mountain Road / East Grade Road) ascends from Pauma Valley on CA-76 to the summit of Palomar Mountain in the Cleveland National Forest, climbing from roughly 2,500 to 5,250 feet across seven miles of continuous switchbacks and hairpin turns. The road is considered the most technically demanding road in Southern California, threading rocky ledges and dense chaparral with dramatic panoramas opening through the turns. The Palomar Observatory — home to the historic 200-inch Hale Telescope — sits at the top. Pair with South Grade Road (S6 south) for a loop back to CA-76. Accessible year-round from San Diego (about 65 miles northeast).
