Pololu Valley Lookout

Highway 270 runs along the Kohala coast until it simply stops, and the lookout is where it stops. From the small paved pull-off at road's end, the view opens over a deep, cliff-bound valley — green walls dropping to a black-sand beach, with the Kohala sea cliffs stretching away along the windward shore. There is no entry fee and no reservation required. Parking is limited, and early arrival improves your odds of a spot in the lot; otherwise roadside parking along the shoulder is the fallback.

The valley itself tells a longer story. It sits at the northern end of a series of erosional valleys carved into the windward side of the Kohala coast, and was once cultivated for taro before the completion of the Kohala Ditch redirected water away from the valley floor. Today it is uninhabited, and that absence of development is plain from the rim — no structures, no beach amenities, no facilities of any kind down below. There are no public restrooms at the lookout; a portable toilet is sometimes present near the parking area. The lookout faces northeast, which means it catches morning light directly.

For riders who want more than the view, a steep trail descends from the trailhead at the overlook to the valley floor and black-sand beach — a short but strenuous descent that becomes slippery after rain. The beach water is not safe for swimming due to strong currents and rough surf, and there is no lifeguard. The lookout itself is the stop; everything else is optional.
