The Overlook Restaurant

Opened in 1948, the place has roots that go back to the 1937 Ohio River flood that washed away the original town of Leavenworth and pushed residents up onto the bluff. What started as a small café and grocery store — with gas pumps out front — grew into a full-service restaurant and lounge without ever moving off that same bluff above the river. The interior reflects that long history: salvaged barn beams and planks were used to renovate the dining room, and a large outdoor deck was added over the years so the view could be the point, not just a backdrop.

The food is straightforward country cooking — fried chicken, pork chops, catfish fillets, chicken pot pie — the kind of menu that hasn't needed reinventing because it draws people back. From the dining room and the deck, the Ohio River's Horseshoe Bend lays out across 20 miles of open water, and on a clear day you can watch river barges working the current below. It sits directly on SR-62, which traces the Ohio River Scenic Byway through Crawford County, so there's no detour required — just pull in, park, and eat with a view that does most of the talking.
