Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve
The only national preserve dedicated to the tallgrass prairie, protecting 10,894 acres of the Flint Hills along K-177 north of Strong City. The Spring Hill Ranch limestone mansion (1881) and the Fox Creek Schoolhouse anchor a visitor center where rangers issue free maps and trail guides. A free-roaming bison herd grazes the upland pastures — bison are regularly visible from the ranch loop road. The preserve sits midway on the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, making it the natural mid-ride stop on the K-177 corridor between Council Grove and Cassoday.
The ideal Flint Hills mid-ride stop: dramatic limestone buildings, open-sky bison sightings, and NPS staff who can point you to the best sweepers north and south on K-177 — with clean restrooms and a trail for stretching your legs.
