Jeff Busby Site — Little Mountain Overlook

Sitting at milepost 193.1 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, this is the only true overlook along the Mississippi section of the Parkway — a fact that makes it a natural pull-off for anyone riding the full length. The site is named for Thomas Jefferson Busby, a Mississippi congressman who in 1934 introduced the bill that authorized a survey of the Old Natchez Trace; four years later the road was designated a unit of the National Park System. That history gives the stop a bit more weight than a simple rest break.

The overlook sits atop Little Mountain, and on a clear day the view stretches roughly 20 miles across the ridges and valleys below — terrain shaped by a geological formation called the Wilcox series that extends northeast into Alabama. A short trail descends from the overlook into a shady hollow and loops back in around 30 minutes. NPS-managed facilities include restrooms, picnic tables, and interpretive exhibits on the natural and human history of the area. Note that tree growth over the years has reduced some of the open sight lines at the parking area itself; the cleaner views reward those who walk the trail to the summit.

For riders doing the full Parkway over multiple days, the 18-site campground is first-come, first-served with no reservation required and no fee, making it a practical overnight without needing to leave the Parkway corridor. Pull-through and back-in sites are both available.
