Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway (NE-2)
NE-2 runs 272 miles from Grand Island to Alliance across the largest stabilized sand dune field in the Western Hemisphere, with long banked turns that follow the dune terrain. The scenery improves dramatically west of Broken Bow; plan fuel stops, as towns are far apart.
What you'll hit along the way.
Rider-verified stops, overlooks, fuel, and the corners worth knowing about — in the order you'll meet them.
Grand Island
Eastern terminus with full services — the best place to fuel up and provision before heading into the Sandhills.
Broken Bow
Ranching town with fuel, food, and lodging; the byway's most distinctive dune scenery begins west of here.
Thedford
Small village near the heart of the Sandhills — a practical fuel stop given the long empty stretches on either side.
Alliance
Western terminus town with full services at the edge of the Panhandle.
