Leonard Harrison State Park Overlook

Route 660 dead-ends at the park entrance, which means every rider who completes a PA-44 or PA-144 run through north-central Pennsylvania arrives here at a natural stopping point with no backtracking required. The park is open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset, and day use carries no fee — you park, walk a short path, and the gorge opens in front of you.

The overlook sits on the east rim of Pine Creek Gorge, an 800-foot-deep canyon at this point, carved by glacial floodwaters over thousands of years. The gorge stretches roughly 47 miles in total length. From the main overlook you can see both up and down the canyon; the DCNR describes these as the park's "most famous scenic views." The visitor center is open from summer through fall foliage season and includes a Pennsylvania Wilds Conservation Shop stocked with locally made goods. For riders who want to stretch after the saddle, a 0.6-mile Overlook Trail loop leads to a secondary south-facing vista, and the Turkey Path drops 800 feet to the canyon floor — a serious out-and-back hike that the park itself flags as its most difficult trail.

Fall is the prime draw for timing a visit. The DCNR notes the scenery is especially strong from late September through mid-October, when the hardwood canopy turns yellow, orange, red, and purple against pockets of evergreen below. Cell service is unpredictable in and around the park, so downloading a map before leaving Wellsboro is worth doing.
