US-178 — Pickens to NC Border (Eastatoe Gap)
The mountain segment of US-178 from Pickens north to the North Carolina border at Rosman is one of the most technically demanding and rewarding motorcycle roads in the South Carolina Upstate. The road crosses the Eastern Continental Divide at Eastatoe Gap, then delivers a curvaceous and steep descent along Eastatoe Creek before climbing again through Beasley Gap and dropping sharply to the Oolenoy River valley. The 43-mile stretch from Pickens to the NC line offers relentless switchbacks, significant elevation change, smooth pavement, and minimal traffic compared to better-known Upstate routes. A fuel stop is available at the US-178/US-123 crossroads midway through the run.
