New Hampshire is a small state that earns a disproportionate amount of seat time. The White Mountains alone could anchor a week of riding without a single repeated road. Add the Lakes Region, a handful of quiet back-highway corridors, and the oldest motorcycle rally in the country, and you have a riding destination that rewards both a long weekend and a full tour.

Start with the Kanc

Most riders anchor a New Hampshire trip around the Kancamagus Highway (NH-112), and for good reason. The 34.5-mile run from Lincoln east to Conway crosses 2,855-foot Kancamagus Pass, threads through White Mountain National Forest, and delivers the kind of continuous mountain scenery that keeps you from wanting to stop — even though you should. The Hancock Overlook sits just past the hairpin on the Lincoln side, at roughly 2,150 feet, with a wide southward view of the Osceola Mountains. On the eastern stretch, the C.L. Graham Wangan Overlook opens up the Swift River watershed just past the pass. Both overlooks have paved pull-offs sized for groups. Mid-week in shoulder season — late May or early October before peak foliage crowds — the Kanc rides cleanly. In mid-July or peak fall weekends, expect slow traffic on the climbs.

A short detour worth taking: Bear Notch Road is a seasonal, nine-mile connector that links the Kanc to US-302 in Bartlett. It's wooded throughout, with rolling elevation changes and several pull-offs with mountain views. The road closes for winter and reopens in late spring — check conditions before building a loop around it. It's the most natural way to stitch the Kanc together with Crawford Notch (US-302), which runs 30 miles from Twin Mountain southeast through Bretton Woods, past the Mount Washington Hotel site, and into North Conway with sweeping notch scenery the whole way.

North of the Kanc

Pinkham Notch (NH-16) is the primary north-south corridor through the heart of the range — roughly 30 miles of long, sweeping curves between the Presidential and Carter-Moriah ranges. It's also the access road for the Mt. Washington Auto Road — Base Gate. The 7.6-mile toll road climbs 4,618 feet at an average 11.6% grade to the highest peak in the Northeast. Motorcycles are permitted, and the road is paved, but the grade is sustained and the drop-offs are real. Check the summit weather before committing — conditions can shift fast at 6,288 feet, and the upper road closes in adverse weather.

If you're routing north and want a road with less traffic than NH-16, Hurricane Mountain Road connects Intervale to the Chatham, Maine line in about three miles per side — but it earns its reputation. The grades run 10–16%, the road is narrow with limited sightlines, and pavement condition varies. Riders on larger touring bikes consistently note it fits smaller machines better. It's worth knowing about before you commit to it unprepared. The road is gated in winter.

The easternmost notch in the range, Evans Notch (Route 113), straddles the NH–Maine border and is the quietest of the White Mountain passes. The road runs wooded and winding through the national forest between Gilead, Maine and Fryeburg, Maine, with the notch itself at 1,410 feet. It's a useful low-traffic alternative to NH-16 if you're coming from or heading toward the Conway area on a busy weekend.

The Far North and the Lakes Region

For riders willing to make the northern run, Dixville Notch (NH-26) is the most remote notch in the state — 31 miles from Colebrook east to the Maine border through genuine boreal wilderness and a narrow granite gorge. The trade-off is a long ride up through the Great North Woods; watch for moose at dawn and dusk throughout.

South of the mountains, the Lake Winnipesaukee Loop (NH-109) gives you the full 65-mile circumnavigation of New Hampshire's largest lake, with Laconia Motorcycle Week anchoring the western shore every June. The 103rd running — June 13–21, 2026 — draws riders to Weirs Beach for nine days of rides, racing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and the annual Gunstock Hill Climb.

Plan Your Ride

Fuel up before the Kanc — there are no gas stations on NH-112 itself. If you're running Crawford Notch and the Kanc in a single day, Bear Notch Road is the obvious connector, but confirm it's open seasonally. For the Mt. Washington Auto Road, check the summit forecast at the official road site before leaving the valley. Polly's Pancake Parlor in Sugar Hill works as a breakfast anchor for a Franconia Notch and Crawford Notch day — it's been serving riders since 1938 and sits at a hilltop with direct views of the Franconia Ridge. Allow a full day minimum for the White Mountains core loop; two days is more honest if you want to ride each notch without rushing. White Mountain Harley-Davidson in North Conway is on NH-16 at the southern gateway if you need service or gear before heading north.
