Longleaf Vista Recreation Area
Day-use picnic and overlook area on the Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway inside Kisatchie National Forest, the only national forest in Louisiana. Set on a high ridge in the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, the site offers panoramic views of buttes, pine uplands, and rocky bluffs — terrain unlike anything else in flat Louisiana. A 1.5-mile interpretive loop departs from the large parking area.
Riders running Forest Highway 59 — the Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway — through Kisatchie National Forest, Louisiana's only national forest, arrive at a landscape that doesn't look like Louisiana at all. The Vista sits on a ridge where the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness surrounds the overlook on three sides, putting sandstone bluffs, pine-covered buttes, and rocky outcrops directly in front of you. The terrain along the byway ranges from around 120 to 400 feet in elevation — genuinely rugged by the standards of a flat state — and the ridge-top overlook is where that character pays off most fully.
The site itself is a free day-use area with a large paved parking lot, a stone gazebo at the viewpoint, picnic tables, barbecue pits, flush restrooms, and drinking water — enough to make a proper stop of it. A 1.5-mile interpretive loop departs from the trailhead here, winding through meadows, bottomland hardwoods, high mesas, and creek crossings if you want to walk the terrain you just rode through. There is no fee to park, use the trail, or picnic.
The 17-mile Longleaf Scenic Byway (Forest Highway 59) is Louisiana's best twisty road — the Vista is the natural stopping point at the crest of the ridge.
