Painted Canyon Overlook

Sitting just off I-94 at Exit 32, the Painted Canyon Overlook is part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park's South Unit — and it's the first real look at the North Dakota Badlands most westbound riders get. The overlook is free to access; no entry fee is collected here, even though the South Unit proper charges an admission fee a few miles to the west. The Painted Canyon Visitor Center sits at the pull-off and operates seasonally, with rangers on hand and park maps available inside.

What makes it worth the two-minute detour is the geology laid out in front of you. The buttes scattered across the canyon show distinct layers of rock in different colors — the result of millions of years of sediment deposits from ancient rivers and volcanic ash, then carved out by erosion. The Little Missouri River shaped these canyons over geologic time, and wind and water continue to reshape them. Wind is a real factor on the exposed rim, so secure loose gear before you walk the short paved path to the overlook railing. Wildlife — including bison — are sometimes visible from the rim; keep your distance if they're near the parking area.

The visitor center is only open during the summer season, so restroom and ranger availability depends on the time of year. The overlook itself is accessible year-round from the interstate pull-off. If you have more time, a short nature trail drops into the canyon from near the visitor center for a closer look at the terrain.
