Flo's Drive In
A legendary open-air clam shack on the shore of Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth's Island Park neighborhood, open seasonally since 1936. Flo's Drive In has been operating out of Island Park in Portsmouth since 1936, when the original owner moved a chicken coop from her farm to the spot and started selling seafood. The building has been rebuilt after hurricane damage more than once over the decades — a fact the place wears without apology. It's a seasonal operation, open Thursdays through Sundays, and the menu is straightforward: whole-belly fried clams, clam rolls, stuffed quahogs, lobster rolls, and the kind of Rhode Island clam cakes that draw arguments about who makes them best.
The setup is open-air, order-at-the-window, eat-at-a-picnic-table — no table service, no reservation, no dress code. Everything is cooked to order, and the kitchen will occasionally run out of an item when fishing seasons or weather limit the fresh supply. That's the deal, and regulars accept it. For riders doing a circuit of Aquidneck Island, the drive up Park Avenue into Island Park keeps you off the main tourist drag through Newport and drops you at water's edge without the parking scramble.
